Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Redmon.
Kristy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After practicing pharmacy for over two decades during the height of the opioid crisis, I came to the realization that I couldn’t continue down that path. While I knew my years as a pharmacist were spent helping countless patients, the heartbreak of seeing addiction on the front lines had become too much. I knew there had to be a better way.
Luckily, the Colorado Department of Agriculture was launching their Industrial Hemp Program right about that time. My family and I realized that with my background, and their many years of experience in business operations, management, and cannabis cultivation, we had the perfect skill set for this new CBD hemp industry. We then set out to work on a vertically integrated seed to shelf business model. 2020 will be our fifth year farming industrial hemp and we’re truly proud to be improving people’s lives in a way that is both natural and healthy.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with many other entrepreneurs, we have definitely come face to face with adversity along the way. I think our biggest challenge was being hit with a trademark lawsuit fairly early on. Most people don’t know that cannabis and hemp cultivators aren’t protected by federal trademark laws and thus become vulnerable in that regard. We spent a year or so rebranding and were able to turn it into a very positive and exciting process for the entire family. We emerged with a much stronger brand and it’s even more personal and meaningful to us than before.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Windy Hill Hemp is a pharmacist owned and family operated industrial hemp farm in Franktown, CO that grows, processes, and produces full-spectrum solventless CBD Hemp products. We also have an active feminized seed breeding program where we offer CBD feminized seeds to other farmers in the industry.
The CBD hemp extract that goes into our products is different because we don’t use any solvents during the extraction process. From the outset, we intuitively believed that making products with solventless rosin was the right way to go. We simply use heat and pressure to release the cannabinoid-rich oil from the plant. Absolutely no CO2 or ethanol is needed. Few other producers use this method due to the time and labor involved. However, we believe it’s important that no solvents are used after spending years developing our genetics and taking the time and effort to grow our hemp organically.
Our true farm to market approach is what I’m most proud of. With so many choices in the CBD market, I think it’s imperative for customers to know from where their hemp products come. I love it that I can hold any of our products in my hand and say that we grew this hemp using organic processes, we extracted it without solvents, I formulated it, and we produced it all by ourselves. Additionally, every batch is independently lab tested and traceable back to the harvest. For me personally, being involved in the process from start to finish is what job satisfaction is all about. Producing quality products from quality plants is what I’m meant to be doing.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Flexibility and determination are the most important qualities for success around here. With federal and state regulations changing almost daily, the market is very volatile and the ability to adapt quickly is key. You can never stop moving forward or you’ll be left behind in this industry.
